If you did some research about potential sales performance management / enterprise incentive management solutions for your company already, you will have read about some of the top players in that space.  However, there are dozens of SPM solutions that are not as easy to come across, because they are very focused on a specific industry, because they are new in the space, or simply because their web presence may not be what it should be.

I recently worked on a vendor’s guide for OpenSymmetry, profiling 15 leading solutions, many of which I have reviewed on this blog.  These vendors were included based on their client base, corporate recognition, and their contribution to the field of SPM.  They are:

  • ACTEK: ACom3
  • Callidus Software: Callidus Product Suite (TrueComp)
  • Centive: Compel
  • CSSI: Vue Software
  • Enterprise Incentive Software: CATS
  • Glow Teknologies: GloCent
  • Merced Systems: Merced Incentive Management
  • nGenera: nGen Comp
  • Oracle: Oracle Incentive Compensation (OIC)
  • SAP: HR Enterprise Compensation
  • SunGard: iWorks EIM
  • Varicent Software: Varicent SPM
  • Versata Software: Versata Commission
  • Xactly Corporation: Incent
  • ZS Associates: Javelin

I mentioned before that the Sales Performance Management market is seeing an explosion of new solutions to satisfy everybody’s needs.  I also listed 39 additional vendors offering a flavor of incentive compensation within their solution.   With a total of 54 Incentive Compensation solutions, a number which I suspect will keep growing - especially if the economy recovers - it can be a real challenge to find the best solution for your needs.

I can’t share the guide on my blog, but since I put some effort into it, if you send me an email at julien.dionne@opensymmetry.com or call me at 713-819-3979, I will be glad to send you a copy.

Anonymous Incentive Compensation Vendors Webinar

I try to make my blog as independent as possible from my job. I try to share some knowledge about the compensation management industry, various SPM vendors, best practices, etc. However, sometimes there is a fine line between both, since they are so closely related. This is one of those times I will cross the line and blur this distinction, to promote an event hosted by OpenSymmetry. Why am I promoting this event? Because the event is free, because it’s directly related to what I believe you care about, and because my boss said that if I didn’t…  I’m joking.

“We” are hosting a series of webinars where leading sales performance management solutions will be demonstrated in an anonymous setting.

Participants of the webinars will learn about:
– Which functionality are offered by each sales performance management solution
– What key characteristics distinguishes solutions from each other
– Under which conditions and requirements are the solutions expected to provided the best value
– How compensation plans can be configured and maintained within each solution
– Which other important features such as reporting and modeling are available with each tool
Convinced? If not, here are a few more reasons for participating:
  • If you don’t have a compensation system at the moment, but if your company could use one “some day”, that will give you the best possible overview of the solutions on the market.
  • Even if your company could not care less for an SPM solution, maybe you will end up in a role where the knowledge of these solutions will be important, and maybe give you a competitive edge.
  • Even if you don’t work in a role that is related to compensation, knowing about these systems could open up some doors, some day.
  • If you DO have a comp system, why not find out about the other solutions on the market. Maybe you will learn how things could be done differently, maybe its time to change to another system, maybe its just fun to compare the strengths and weaknesses of your current system compared to other solutions.
  • The demo is “anonymous”. I’m guessing you might get a friendly follow up call from OpenSymmetry, but no pressure selling from the vendors.
  • If some day you would like to work at OpenSymmetry, I imagine having some knowledge of various incentive compensation systems would be an asset.

Ok… So I *know* how many readers I get on this blog every day. I also *know* that many come to this blog to read what I have to say about the various solutions. And finally, I *know* that not even half of my readers signed up for these webinars. Maybe this is because I’m doing a too good job at reviewing the applications here, and that you feel you don’t need to see them, but I’m telling you, seeing the systems in action is what is really needed to truly appreciate what they can do.

Here are the dates of the webinars:
October 16th: Varicent
October 20th: Merced Systems
October 23rd: ZS Associates
October 27th: Xactly
October 30th: Versata
November 3rd: nGenera
November 6th: Callidus Software
The only thing you need to do to participate is to signup.  It’s free…

ZS Associates’ Javelin Suite Additional Modules

Before getting side-tracked by the Come on SPM Vendors… Grow Up! post and the very active discussion that followed, I described many of the key features of ZS Associates Javelin Incentive Manager.  This post is dedicated to the several modules that are part of the Javelin suite, which complement the incentive manager.

Javelin Territory Designer
Unlike Javelin Incentive Manager, Territory Designer is a desktop application.  It does not require any special hardware, offers several neat functionalities and is used by around 100 clients in the US.  I should make the disclaimer that I haven’t seen other commercial territory management solutions, so I don’t have anything against which I can compare this application.

The main screen of Territory Designer shows a map which can be zoomed in and out, and where each territory is shown in a different color.

Territories can be selected with a simple click and drag, which displays additional information about those territories.  It is also possible to search for a territory by zip code, territory name, city, product, or any other information defined.

What I have been told by the ZS team is that this territory manager distinguishes itself from other similar tools by being able to handle complicated and multiple sales forces, complicated relationships, and by being able to optimize territories for the most fair configuration by following fully customizable rules.
Another feature which I did not expect to see in this application was how the application supports different scenarios and tracks who makes changes.

Javelin Quota Designer
This is another desktop application, but it is being redesigned for the web in 2009.    Javelin Quota Designer facilitates the design and modeling of sales quotas.  It allows seeing the impact of new goals on variable compensation, based on historical data.   “Playing” with different variables and targets allows to model “what-if” scenarios.

Many advanced analytics reports are available to provide useful information about the territories.  Some of these reports, such as the correlation report, help ensuring that territories are shared in an equitable manner.

Javelin Quota Refiner
Anyone who has been through the process of obtaining input from the field to update quotas will appreciate the usefulness of this simple tool.  Javelin Quota Refiner allows managers to review and approve quotas online.  Some conditions can be setup such as a setting parameters for how much a quota can be modified.

Javelin MBO Manager
Javelin’s MBO Manager is a simple web-based interface to create, approve and rate performance on objective-based plan components.  As expected, MBO manager allows managers to add objectives for their reports, and supports the MBO lifecycle from objective setting, to gathering approvals, to finalizing the objectives.  It also allows setting payout targets based on the percent attainment of these objectives.

Javelin Communication Manager
This tool can be used to communicate anything, from reports to plan documents, etc.  Files can be organized in a folder format and can distribute files by email, FTP or by providing a link.  Communication Manager is very flexible in how files are organized and shared.  One feature which I expected to see but didn’t find in the communication manager was the ability to get an approval for plan documents and to handle dispute resolution, but this feature is part of another module called OnTrak, which is part of 3rd party application which integrates into Javelin’s interface.

That’s everything I have to say about the Javelin Suite for now!  Overall, a great product which I am very happy to have had the opportunity to see in action.  I will keep my eyes opened for any updates related to Javelin Suite and I’ll make sure to discuss them here.

To find out more about ZS Associates and Javelin Suite (of course you can visit their website), but you can also attend their anonymous demo on October 23.  Many other vendors are also presenting on different dates as listed in the banner at the top of this page.

Stay tuned, my next SPM vendor review will be for Merced Incentive Management solution (MIM), which as I discussed before purchased Practique Associates last summer.

ZS Associates’ Javelin Incentive Manager - Part 2

Javelin Incentive Manager has a built-in an ETL tool (Extract Transform Load).  This tool is used to load the data in the Javelin application in the required format.  In addition, validation rules can be configured to report an error or a warning if certain conditions are not met.

Reporting
Many reports are available, but they are all Microsoft Excel reports.  I asked why a more “robust” solution was not used or why the reports were not integrated with the application or in a typical pdf format.  The argument is that by having Excel reports, the payees can “play” with the data and perform some modeling by themselves.  Clients with heavy-duty reporting and analytics needs will be pleased to find out that Javelin Incentive Manager can also easily integrate with the leading Business Intelligence application Business Objects.

On-Demand versus On-Premise
This is a big dilemma for many companies: less up-front cost, no technology worries and quicker implementation with an on-demand solution, versus more control with an on-premise solution.  Javelin Incentive Manager might be a good solution for those who can’t make up their mind.  I haven’t actually seen this, but apparently it is very quick and easy to move from an on-demand to an on-premise model, and vice versa.  A company could choose the on-demand offering as a proof of concept or until it makes sense to invest in the on-premise application…  or they could move to the on-demand offering if they realize they do not need to host the application themselves.

Operational Model
ZS offers some flexibility most other vendors do not – they offer the ability to outsource all the ongoing processing services and operations (outsourcing), or a part of those operations (co-sourcing).

Speed
Of course, security, reliability and all those other things can be taken for granted from a leading SPM application.  However, what is often a challenge with applications catering to large client is the speed at which it can process the transactions.  This can usually be particularly challenging for on-demand clients with a large number of payees and transactions.  Apparently, this is not a concern for Javelin.  Pipelines do not need to be scheduled ahead of time – the server load balancing ensures a consistent performance for everyone.  A good optimization of the “engine” also allows it to process data quickly (for example, data for 8000 payees with a large transaction volume and complex rules can be processed under 15 minutes).

This was a quick overview of Javelin Incentive Manager, which is the core application within the Javelin Software Suite.  My next post will focus on all the other modules including territory designer, quota designer, quota refiner, MBO manager, and communication manager.

In this post I will describe what I have seen and my impressions of the Javelin Incentive Manager. When logging in, as could be expected, the user is greeted by some message. From there, the user is able to access the Incentive Manager or many of the other modules I will cover in a separate post.

When selecting “Incentive Manager”, the administrator can see or create a new scenario. The demo was for the on-demand version of the application, so each environment (modeling, development, production, etc) where all located on the same server. These environments are only distinguished by a “scenario”. Xactly also uses this concept of scenario, but it is limited to their modeling environment.

When selecting an existing scenario, the different plans and components are displayed.

All of the plan logic is component-based instead of being rule-based. It seems like most solutions I have seen (except Centive and Merced Systems) follow a rule-based approach: credit rules generate credits, some measurement rules aggregate and transform the credits, and finally the commission rules transforms the credits into a commission amount. Javelin Incentive Manager uses a completely different approach which is based on components and workflows. The plans are built by assembling those components. This component approach appears to be very similar to the Informatica ETL interface.

Each component is reusable from workflow to workflow, and can easily be added and named appropriately.

Selecting a component will show its details, which can be edited on the same screen:

Another feature I liked from Javelin Incentive Manager is the ability to look directly at the output of any component once the results are processed. I’m sure this makes troubleshooting and debugging much easier! The component also shows in a different color of a modification caused the results to be out-of-date – this means it’s time to re-process the batch to get updated results if required.

Quick-Start

Future versions of Javelin Incentive Manager will have a “wizard” called Quick Start to create common workflow structures without even having to add components individually. This feature is already in beta testing. I haven’t actually seen it in action, but it looks good.

ZS Associates… Who are those strangers?

As I noted in a previous post, a “new” SPM company made the latest Gartner’s Market Scope 2008 list; ZS Associates. I heard about ZS before when I read a great incentive compensation book called “How to Design and Implement Plans That Work – The Complete Guide to Sales Force Incentive Compensation” written by ZS’ co-founders and a consultant. Maybe I’m guilty of reading the book too quickly, but what I had not realized is that ZS Associates actually created their own sales performance management application, which they call the Javelin Software Suite.

After digging a bit deeper, I learned that ZS Associates is a consulting company based in Illinois, with a strong focus on the pharmaceutical industry. The Javelin suite is offered both on-premise and on-demand. Javelin Incentive Manager is built to handle complex plans requiring a lot of flexibility, and is attractive to organizations with a sales force of 5oo to 10,000 individuals. Many additional modules are available including a territory designer, a quota designer, and an MBO manager (Management by Objectives).

I scheduled a call with several ZS Associates employees to get a demo of their applications. I will dedicate a post to describe the Javelin Incentive Manager, and another one to discuss some of the other modules I have seen.

Back to business… I asked this group why I hadn’t heard about Javelin before – I haven’t exactly been hiding under a rock… However I have never been involved on a life sciences project yet and this may be why I hadn’t heard about their solution. The historical focus for the Javelin application has been on life sciences, and its flexibility has made it a good fit for complex requirements of that vertical. However, the application is not life sciences specific by any mean, and it’s really a change in strategy that pushed ZS to be more proactive at marketing the Javelin Incentive solution to the high tech, insurance / financial services, and manufacturing industries.

Unlike other software vendors, ZS is a consulting firm with a product, more than a vendor with some consultants. Incentive compensation is their largest practice area and they have about 200 consultants dedicated to compensation related projects. Because the company is much larger than a typical vendor, and since they focus a lot on consulting, their workforce is spread across 17 offices in 10 countries. As could be expected, and as they confirmed, having offices close to their customers makes a big difference. ZS also has an office in India with more than 100 consultants, which it plans to expand to over 250 consultants in the next 3 years.

In my next post I will review the Javelin Suite, based on the extensive demonstration I received last week.
